The Westmount Inclusive Playground Project is well underway with many people of all abilities forming a central committee to make this project a reality.  The playground will feature rubberized surfaces, a wheelchair challenge course and be accessible to children and people of all abilities.
The enclosed playground will provide a safe and fun venue for blind children. It will have features that will enhance play for blind kids with tactile markers and audible cues to define where they are.
The facilities include multi-deck components with wheelchair ramps, accessible swings and ground-level panels, bells and drums, and brightly painted pavement markings. The playground has been designed around an airport theme - a tribute to the first municipal airport, which was located on the site 75 years ago. Play structures include a simulated control tower, runway and emergency fire trucks.
A mobility challenge course, a special feature at the site, which will improve the skills of wheelchair users, will also be built. The course will include 18 to 20 different surfaces and challenges for wheelchair users of any age.
The components will simulate real-life obstacles like asphalt and gravel surfaces, concrete curbs, inward- and outward-opening doors and small hills.

Moneys made available include $100,000 from Halifax Regional Municipality, $70,000 from McDonalds, $67,000 from Sport Nova Scotia, approximately $12,000 from Saturn, and $10,000 from TD-Canada Trust. Halifax International Airport is donating $1,000. Several municipal councillors are also contributing money from their district capital funds.  Coun. Sheila Fougere (Connaught-Quinpool) is giving $25,000 from her own district capital fund.
